Shabana Basij-Rasikh
Co-founder and President of SOLA, the School of Leadership Afghanistan

Shabana Basij-Rasikh was born and raised in Kabul, Afghanistan. Under the Taliban regime, she dressed as a boy in order to go to school since girls were banned from attending – with dire consequences if she was caught. Shabana was one of the lucky few who received an education which enabled her to attend Middlebury College. While in college, Shabana co-founded SOLA – the School of Leadership, Afghanistan. Today, SOLA is the first and only all-girls boarding school in Afghanistan and SOLA students represent all major ethnic groups and religious sects. Its goal is to have their students attend university worldwide and return to substantive careers in Afghanistan. In addition to leading SOLA, Shabana is a global ambassador for Girl Rising, a call to action seeking investment in girls’ education worldwide.
